The New Brunswick Community College mandated BC2 to develop master plans for the Dieppe and Bathurst campus facilities to guide planning and development strategies over the next 30 years. With the objective of defining a bold and innovative vision for campus evolution, the planning process was based on the integration of sustainable development principles, while taking into account the specific needs of the institutions, as well as those of local communities and partners.

The development vision guides the Dieppe campus toward a place of innovation and learning that is welcoming and modern. It is perfectly integrated into its environment, promoting connectivity and focusing on human-scale developments as well as the development of multiple partnerships. For Bathurst, this was a rare opportunity to showcase the campus’s unique historical heritage while modernizing facilities to meet cutting-edge research and teaching needs. Both spatial organization concepts initiate the transition of the campuses toward human-scale learning spaces and complete, welcoming living environments, harmoniously integrated into their urban context.

Building on this shared vision and a complete and rigorous site assessment, major development principles were established to guide the development of current and future facilities. These principles led to the creation of strategies addressing mobility, the built form, environment, lighting, and innovation. A flexible and evolving implementation strategy provides a realistic approach to transforming the sites. Special attention was also given to transitional occupancy strategies for key campus spaces, to ensure that the guiding principles of creating vibrant, innovative, and green spaces continue throughout the process.
