The National Capital Commission (NCC) owns riparian lands along Brewery Creek, located in the heart of downtown Gatineau, near Montcalm Street. BC2 was mandated to support the NCC in planning the development of this area, to transform these lands into a dynamic public space offering permanent access to the shoreline, while contributing to the revitalization of Montcalm Street.
This initiative was based on the idea of optimizing the use of lands formerly dedicated to green spaces and parking by creating accessible and inclusive public spaces. Another objective was to ensure the lasting enhancement of the creek’s natural shoreline. The proposed modifications were designed to meet future user needs, while aligning with the development vision of a district in full transformation. The integration of mixed uses, including residential and commercial spaces, will be carried out in accordance with principles of sustainability and environmental preservation. This will also contribute to the revitalization of downtown.
The proposal showcases the shoreline while maintaining its accessibility through the development of a vast public park. A network of multifunctional trails will ensure continuity of the active transportation network and will be enhanced by a public art trail. The project includes the addition of buildings occupying only 35% of the site area. A mix of uses will animate the space through residential, cultural, recreational, and commercial activities. Additionally, special attention was given to visual corridors toward Brewery Creek from Montcalm Street, to ensure optimal integration of the project into its environment. This approach will foster a harmonious connection between residents, visitors, and the surrounding nature, while bringing new vitality to this central urban space.
