The City of Sept-Îles is the administrative centre of the Sept-Rivières RCM. The municipality covers 2,140 km² and includes three village centres resulting from the 2003 municipal merger: Gallix, Moisie, and Sept-Îles. In recent years, it has faced a situation of demographic decline, as have several other cities on Québec’s North Shore.
Quality of life is an important asset for attracting and retaining people. One significant component of community quality of life is the network of parks, green spaces, and outdoor sports and recreational facilities. The COVID-19 pandemic underlined the full importance of these spaces for maintaining citizens’ physical and mental health.
In this context, the City of Sept-Îles wanted to establish its first Parks and Green Spaces Master Plan to guide the development of its 43 parks and over 250 hectares of green spaces within its boundaries. As developed, the master plan established an intervention plan adapted to local issues and the region’s particular northern context. A consultation process was implemented to ensure that the proposed actions meet the real needs of citizens.
