DEVELOPING A UNIQUE TRAIL INTEGRATED INTO ITS NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, SERVING AS A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

By developing a trail that integrates perfectly into its natural environment, the team created a unique and inviting space that will serve as a lasting legacy for generations to come. The project showcases the region’s historical sites, attracts visitors, and fosters community engagement. It can serve as inspiration for future urban development projects in Québec and beyond.

Extending approximately 1.5 km, the Grands-Domaines-de-Sillery Trails project is an ambitious achievement that integrates a multitude of elements designed to showcase the sector’s historical sites. Phase 1 includes several paths and interpretive elements around the grand estates of the past, a multifunctional trail, two large lookouts, and a 243-step stairway that winds along the cliff for over 160 m, the famous charcotte of that period. The lookouts and stairway were designed to balance the versatility and durability of galvanized steel with the natural beauty of wood, ensuring harmonious integration into the landscape. The trail also includes seating, interpretive panels, landscaping, plantings, and play modules for children.

Development of the Grands-Domaines-de-Sillery trail is part of the implementation of the Special Urban Planning Program for the Sillery Heritage Site and its surroundings, which was adopted in 2015 following public consultation. The team’s efforts focused on preserving the integrity of the natural environment while developing a route that showcases heritage. The project demonstrates the City of Québec’s commitment to sustainable urbanism and the preservation of its rich cultural heritage.
